Great Forgetting

The focus of my artwork is a reflection on the communist regime in former Czechoslovakia where I spent my childhood, through this work I captured the essence of the period and they arouse memories of this time; good and bad. The title – Great Forgetting comes from the perception and attitude that Slovakians have towards an important period in their history. People in Slovakia consciously try to forget or avoid talking about the topic of communism, with a feeling and sense of denial or uneasiness, appearing ashamed and guilty if they were involved.
My artwork depicts the residue and uses symbolic images from the period of the communism, it is developed from my memories and from conversations with the people I have had in Slovakia. Furthermore, ideas were developed from my research material that I gathered from the museum in my hometown and additionally from my personal memorabilia, inherited from my parents.
Truly, today some of us are holding our heads when thinking about this absurd period. Reflecting on my early life evokes mixed feelings of both laughter and sadness. Nevertheless it leaves much deeper intellectual scars on the generation of my parents. I look back at the memorabilia I have, and realise by examining this evidence that there was no such thing as an uninteresting life.
